Barbadian businesses are being encouraged to offer childcare services and facilitate flexibility in the office to support female employees.
When somebody is working for you it is not just a worker, they are human-being, they have different responsibilities they have different roles which will have an impact on how they perform.
Camille Clarke, operations manager of Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA Inc), shared these sentiments during a panel discussion entitled “Pink Wings: A Conversation With Women In Aviation” which was held on Wednesday, March 8 to commemorate Women In Aviation Week and International Women’s Day.
“In terms of equity we have to understand that people are coming from different backgrounds and different circumstances and stuff like that so for me one thing I think about is flexibility.”
Clarke reminded employers, that employees were also human beings with responsibilities and roles which may have an impact on how they perform.
“Flexibility in terms of me not only being a mother but being a care-giver for my mum is to understand that when somebody is working for you it is not just a worker, they are human-being, they have different responsibilities they have different roles which will have an impact on how they perform.”
The Operations Manager rallied for the provision of childcare services for employees may not have a support system.
“So things like flexibilty like how they are working and their shifts etcetera and also provision for child-care. For me, I was blessed to not have that issue. I have a very large family with my sisters etcetera and my mum so I didn’t have that challenge but there are a lot of persons within the workforce that have the children, that have to be the caregivers and do not have that support so it’s good having that balance and to know that you are leaving your child with somebody that is responsible and is going to take care of them.”
She added: “So I would say for sure persons need to learn to be more flexible in terms of understanding it is a person, it is not just a worker, it is a person with problems, with issues, with different roles that they come with. So it is having that flexibility and having those resources in place that can just help us be relaxed when we are at work, to know my child is maybe just around the corner being taken care of.”
